‘Cardio’ short for Cardiovascular exercise is the marmite of the health and fitness industry.
Let’s face it, you’re either a ‘Cardio bunny’ or a ‘Cardio-phobe’ but love it or hate it, Cardio is a critical component of a healthy body (and mind).
The issue with the health and fitness industry is that the function of cardio is sold as a soul destroying method of fat loss, rather than as it’s true intention… To exercise your cardiovascular system!
For those who prioritise strength training, taking the time to train each muscle group for a balanced physique, don’t forget that your heart is a muscle too!
Cardio can be a great tool for fat loss, but it’s not a necessity. And just because you don’t need to lose fat, doesn’t mean you don’t need to train your cardiovascular system!
Instead of viewing Cardio as a monotonous addition to your exercise routine, find fun/sustainable ways to raise your heart heart rate on a regular basis.
- Put on your favourite music and dance around your living room
- Hire a bike and cycle around the countryside
- Take the stairs instead of the lift
- Go for a walk on your lunch break
- Take shorter rests during exercise sets
Remember that a healthy body requires balance. If you prioritise strength training and mobility, make time for cardio too and if you prefer to pound the pavements, strength training is just as important as stretching!
